Finances

As a non-profit organisation Dansk Retursystem A/S is financed by fees paid by importers and producers for the packaging that they sell on the Danish market. In practice, this means that our accounts should not show either a profit or a loss. To accommodate this requirement, the level of fees charged fluctuates from year to year.

Fees

Dansk Retursystem adjusts the fees on an annual basis. The calculation is based on the importers and producers’ registered sales volumes in the previous year, together with their expectations of the sales volumes for the year ahead. The fees charged, and the actual overheads covered by the fee payments received are required to be in equilibrium over a six-year period (2002–2008). Dansk Retursystem A/S needs to provide the Danish Environmental Protection Agency with ongoing documentation showing that these conditions have been observed.

The fees that finance the Danish deposit and return system fall under two headings: logistics and collection. Logistics fees cover administrative overheads, handling fees and efficiency improvements in grocery stores. Collection fees cover the costs of collecting and counting one-way packaging.

Dansk Retursystem A/S calculates the fees, which are thereafter approved by the Danish Ministry of the Environment.
