Registration of packaging

Importers and producers wishing to sell drink products that are covered by the Danish deposit and return system must register their packaging with Dansk Retursystem A/S.

One precondition for selling a product in Denmark is that the seller is either a Danish producer or importer, or has a Danish importer for the product.

Packaging registration procedure

Packaging must be registered on the system before the product can be sold. In practical terms, this involves the completion of a registration form which is sent to Dansk Retursystem A/S, accompanied by 10 empty examples of the packaging concerned. A fee of DKK 2,000 excl. VAT is payable on registration of the first new packaging type in the calendar year. The fee also covers any subsequent registrations made in the same year.

Dansk Retursystem A/S will confirm within two weeks of receiving the registration form whether the packaging conforms to the labelling requirements laid down by the Statutory Order. Marketing and selling of the product can start no later than four weeks after the application has been received by Dansk Retursystem A/S. The date will be indicated on the registration confirmation that the applicant receives on completion of the registration process.

When registering new packaging, applicants must also take into account how the packaging will be labelled as deposit refundable. There are two options: direct printing onto the packaging or onto the original product label (so-called primary labelling), or self-adhesive deposit labels.
