Registered Dansk Retursystem A/S sales locations benefit from free collection of registered one-way packaging. The operation of this part of the system is financed by a collection fee paid by the importers and producers for the one-way packaging that they sell.
Dansk Retursystem A/S collects the empty packaging in sacks and in pallet containers. The collection sacks are made from recycled plastic and come in two sizes – small sacks for glass bottles, and large ones for plastic bottles and cans. Sales locations that handle large quantities of glass one-way packaging can opt to have the packaging collected in pallet containers.
Full sacks and pallets containers are transported from the sales locations to the nearest Dansk Retursystem A/S counting station – Vejle in Jutland, or Hedehusene just outside Copenhagen.
The counting station records the sending location of every sack and pallets. One-way packaging is fed through a counting machine before being compacted. Once the process is complete we sell the material from the one-way packaging for further recycling.
By May 2009 almost 1400 stores have installed a compactor which compacts cans and plastic one-way packaging returned by consumers via the reverse vending machines. Deposits are registered online before compaction. One of the benefits of this new system is that accounting for the deposits between the sales locations and Dansk Retursystem A/S is much faster than normal. This results in savings on transport and counting, thereby further reducing the impact on the environment.
