Grocery stores that sell refillable bottles are eligible for payment of a so-called handling fee. The handling fee covers sorting the returned bottles by size and type and having them in the right crate or box when the supplier collects them.
Payment of the handling fee is administrated by Dansk Retursystem, but this is conditional on the grocery store being registered on the system. Stores wishing to take advantage of the handling fee pay an annual administration fee of DKK 500 to be registered on the system.
The handling fee does not apply to the hotel and catering sectors. This is because there is usually a limited number of suppliers, and thus the requirement for sorting of empty packaging is much lower than in grocery stores.
