Returns percentages are important
The environmental benefits of the deposit and return system depend on how many cans and bottles consumers return. For this reason, the Statutory Order on deposits and collection sets target for returns percentages, i.e. the total items of packaging sold on which deposits are refunded, which consumers have returned.
The aim is that in 2013 the returns percentages for one-way packaging should be 95%, with a figure of 98% for refillable bottles. Refillable bottles are collected by the breweries, which wash and refill the bottles again. Dansk Retursystem A/S is responsible for collecting and recycling one-way packaging.Heading in the right direction
Fortunately, returns percentages are generally on the increase. The table below shows the returns percentages achieved over the last four years:

In 2011, the returns percentage for refillable packaging was 104%. This was primarily because consumers returned more bottles than were sold.
